The Elyria Swansea neighborhood is most prized for its spectacular nightlife and is also known as the home of the Denver Coliseum. Located along the Interstate 70 corridor, residents have easy access for commuters to reach employers in neighboring cities.
The neighborhood boundaries include the South Platte River to the west, Colorado Boulevard to the east, Adams County to the north and 38th and 40th Avenue to the south.
In the late 1800's, Elyria and Swansea were two different neighborhoods and held their own distinct histories. The Swansea neighborhood was named after the mining seaport town of Swansea in Wales. Early on, there was a Swansea smelter, a factory for smelting metal from its ore.
Elyria was incorporated in 1890 and a few years later, a Town Hall was built. It was the more political community and addressed many of the social issues of the time, including a gambling ordinance and the annexation of five taverns in the area.
The most influential decision made for this area, was the building of Interstate 70, which was built through both the Elyria and Swansea neighborhoods in the early 1960's even though residents and business owners disliked the idea due to concerns about how it would impact the home values.
With a population of 6,636, a little more than half of the residents in Elyria Swansea rent their homes, while approximately 46% are owner occupied.
The median home value is $249,785 making it one of the more affordable neighborhoods to live in around Denver. Renters pay an average of $1,191 per month.
While there are currently not many homes for sale in the Elyria Swansea neighborhood, there are many vacant buildable lots or remodeled historic homes and multi-family housing units.
