Many Irish immigrants moved to the Highlands to pursue employment in rail yards and smelters in the mid 1800's. By the late 1800's many more Italian immigrants moved to the area to work on the railroad.
Residents started growing gardens as the economy slipped into the Denver Depression. Sugar beets became an abundant crop in the area and farming labor was the new attraction for immigrants coming from Mexico.
In the early 1900's, a school and orphanage were opened, as well as the Federal Theater for entertainment. In the decades to come, a subway was added, and residents started opening restaurants and a drugstore.
In the late 1980's, the Denver Planning Department met to form a Sunnyside neighborhood plan, which increased the growth and development of the community.
